Breyers

"The Plastic Toy Horses"

I got my first Breyers when I was about five, she is a blood bay paint Quarter Horse mare; traditional size, named Twix, and a classic palomino Arabian stallion, named Butterfly (I know it is a boy! I was young!). Now, I have close to thirty Breyers! As most of you readers might think, I do not simply play with plastic toy horses of the past, but I take pictures of them. Some people show model horses and are judged on how realistic they are, and how well they represent their breed. My goal is to take creative, eye catching, and realistic pictures of the plastic horses, and soon when I have time, to make Breyer movies. Most of my photography will be captured in Massachusetts, and some in New Hampshire. And most of the tack and props you will see will most likely be made by me, I prefer to make my own custom tack, and specialize it to fit certain models. And just because your favorite model gets a scratch, rubbed, or gets chipped, doesn't mean their purpose is broken, it doesn't mean their spirit and emotion is broken, it simply means they can still relay their message, it just makes their message unique; just a little chipped, and adds character to them.

Plastic horses have more than just frozen in motion, scaled down horses and ponies. They express emotion in their body language. You can see the firey fear in their painted eyes. You can see their warm care in the way they look at you. You can see their curiosity in the way they cock their delicate  heads and tune their fine ears, their elegance in the way they pick up their feet, their strength in their carved muscles. You can see their determination in the way they stubbornly plant all four feet in the soft ground, and you can see the fine detail in the horse's coats. In a way, they are living, expressing emotions that impact you and I, but only if you are able to see it, able understand their purpose. I try to capture these moments, making them look like they are not frozen in motion, but rather expressing their motivations in this world.

This is Cheerio staring at something
she can't quite see, but knows is
her ultimate goal.

balancing on the edge of rocky, barren path.

This is Black Berry looking for that
thing that sparked his curiosity, but it
never stays for him to fully glimpse it.

Unkempt Secrets, facing his fears and fighting for his life;
to truly be set free. But with that freedom,
comes restrictions of responsibility.

Twix, being bold, brave, and brazen; realizing
fear holds you back from happiness.

Cheerio and Touch of Color, pausing to remember the past,
but finding ways to move on and living in the present,
but questioning why the past happened the way it did.
Perhaps it made them who they are today.

Speckled Ember, running away because she can't
handle the world sometimes.

Milk's Favorite Cookie (Oreo), scratching her chin,
confused by what her purpose is in this large world.
And feeling small compared to the ocean.

Imagine, keeping her eyes open and feet walking,
to find what she needs, and to do what she
needs to do to get where she wants to be.

Dun it Again, is independent, not an object to be claimed,
but rather something that can think for herself.
She might appear not need help, but sometimes,
appearances can be deceiving.
